The Utah Hockey Club is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Sports Writer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating compelling written content, including game recaps, player features, and editorial pieces that capture the excitement and narrative of our inaugural season. This role requires a deep understanding of hockey, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to engage fans with unique and insightful storytelling.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Game Coverage: Write timely, accurate, and engaging game previews, recaps, and analysis for home and away games.
  • Player & Team Features: Produce in-depth articles and interviews that highlight players, coaches, and behind-the-scenes aspects of the team.
  • Editorial Content: Contribute to blogs, opinion pieces, and feature stories that provide context, insight, and commentary on team performance, league developments, and trends throughout the NHL.
  • Live Coverage Support: Assist with live game-day reporting, including social media updates, injury reports, and post-game analysis.
  • Content Collaboration: Work closely with the social media, video production, and marketing teams to create multi-platform content that engages the Utah Hockey Club fan base.
  • Adherence to Brand Guidelines: Ensure all written content aligns with the team’s brand voice, editorial standards, and overall marketing strategy.
  • Interviewing & Research: Conduct interviews with players, coaches, and other team personnel, and stay informed about team news, league standings, and relevant developments.
  • Content Calendar: Contribute to the editorial calendar, ensuring consistent, high-quality output throughout the season.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in sports writing, preferably covering hockey.
  • Strong knowledge of hockey, including rules, terminology, and league trends.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and produce accurate, engaging content in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with AP Style or other editorial guidelines.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and basic SEO best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for conducting interviews and interacting with team members.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required during the season.
  • Experience with multimedia content creation, including video scripts or podcasts.
  • Basic knowledge of photo editing tools and social media platforms.
  • Previous work in the sports industry, specifically within professional or collegiate hockey teams.
  • Possessing a portfolio of published articles and numerous writing samples.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This person must be able to observe, inspect, estimate and assess.
  • This person must be able to sit, stand, bend, walk, and climb stairs for long periods of time.
  • This person must be able to lift 20 lbs.
