BASIC PURPOSE:

Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on various types of MWRA vehicles and equipment in a manner, which ensures quality, safety, and proper working order to minimize down time and maximize productivity.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of the Motor Equipment Repairman Foreman.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspects vehicles and equipment to locate trouble and determine repair needs, recommends repairs to foreman.
  • Adjust reports and/or overhauls air conditioner systems, brakes, electrical systems, spring & suspension systems, front-ends, ignition systems, hydraulic systems and valves, standby generators and replaces damaged parts.
  • Diagnoses vehicle/equipment problems including diesel engines, transmissions, and makes necessary repairs.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on various vehicles and equipment to ensure quality, safety and proper working order.
  • Greases and changes oil. Hydraulic fluids and coolants on a scheduled basis according to approved procedures and as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Performs general and complex repairs on heavy-duty trucks and special equipment.
  • Responds to road calls and makes repairs either on the road or in the garage.
  • Performs safety checks to ensure the ability of vehicles and equipment either to pass Massachusetts Safety Inspection.
  • Enters manually or by computer, tasks and parts used on work orders along with diagnostic findings. Works closely with supervisor to insure accuracy of work order information.
  • Operates repair equipment such as but not limited to strut machine, tire machine, wheel balancing machine, acetylene and oxygen torch, and computerized and electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Operates department tow and ramp truck and transports vehicles/equipment from site to site, to/from vendors and from field locations.
  • Recommends needed supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • A high school education or the equivalent; and
  • Four (4) to six (6) years experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education training and or experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and practices used in repairing, rebuilding, and adjusting gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of computerized and electrical diagnostic tools such as but not limited to Tech 1 & 2, Master Tech and OTC Gas Analyzer.
  • Demonstrated skill in use of tools and equipment employed in automotive repairs, such as strut machine, tire machine wheel balancing machine, acetylene & oxygen torch. Experience with operation tow and ramp trucks.
  • Ability to maintain current certifications listed below.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Necessary reading, writing, mathematical and scientific skills and demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Drivers License.
  • A Massachusetts Hoisting Operator's License (1C).
  • Current ASE Certification (within past five years) in Refrigerant Recycling (ASE or equivalent), Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems and Engine Repair.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Mobile and portable radios; hand-held, motorized, and pneumatic tools; copy and fax machines; hand-held and desktop computer; diagnostic; forklifts and other material-handling equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is very loud in field settings, and moderately loud at other work locations.
