We are looking for a diligent and motivated Mortgage Underwriter to join our team! The ideal candidate will possess excellent phone and communication skills and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers. As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in validating income, asset, and collateral documents, including self-employed tax returns and condominium documents. You may be involved in various types of mortgage lending, such as Conventional, Non-QM, FHA, VA, USDA, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze individual residential mortgage loan requests to determine approval or denial.
- Assess financial statements, credit reports, ratios (e.g., debt ratios, loan-to-value), appraisals, title reports, and other relevant documentation.
- Validate income and employment information, as well as the value of a borrower's collateral and assets.
- Ensure submitted files meet the qualifications for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and USDA guidelines based on automated findings.
- Evaluate information on mortgage loan documents to ensure conditions meet established investor standards.
- Confirm that property specifications and loan terms comply with financial institution requirements and government regulations.
- Maintain compliance with industry standards, state and federal laws, and disclosure requirements.
- Communicate loan decisions to internal lenders, coordinators, and/or processors.
- Document the reasons for approval or denial of loans in the loan file.
- Work remotely, with the potential requirement to work from the office based on company needs, with advance notice provided.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of recent retail residential mortgage underwriting experience (FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional) with strong knowledge of agency guidelines.
- In-depth understanding of USDA lending requirements.
- DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications are a plus.
- Strong working knowledge of ATR/QM requirements.
- Experience with Encompass LOS.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, fluid environment while meeting minimum production standards.
- High integrity and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Proficient computer skills; must be skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of compliance and disclosure requirements.
- Familiarity with closing, post-closing, and quality control responsibilities.
- Preference will be given to applicants residing in the EST time zone.
