Position Title: Arkansas Commissioned School Security Officer 

Reports to: Superintendent or designee

Length of Contract: 178 Days

Minimum Qualifications: Police Training/CSSO Certification or Willingness to Obtain CSSO Certification

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Student Support Services

  1. Develop and implement services to the district of the following positions: 

  1. Campus Safety

  2. Staff Training

Communications

  1. Coordinate with Student Services, administrative staff, and local law enforcement in the planning of school safety training and drills.

  2. Resolve issues that impact the safety of students and staff.

  3. Collaborate with other CSSO’s, SRO’s, and local law enforcement in regards to campus safety.

Policies

  1. Maintain accurate records involving students and safety.

  2. Maintain First Aid and CPR Certification.

  3. Attend CSSO initial training and follow-up courses to maintain certification.

  4. Follow district policies.

Illustration of Key Responsibilities and Job Duties:

CSSO

  1. Patrol assigned areas and be visible to students and staff before school, between class changes, during lunch periods, and dismissal time. 

  2. Assists the front office with checking visitors in and out during high traffic hours. 

  3. Assist with monitoring traffic during drop off and pick up. 

  4. Provide security and surveillance of the areas assigned, note and report irregularities which affect the health and welfare of students and school personnel.

  5. Take necessary action as to trespassers, suspicious persons and conditions, and report significant action, occurrences and conditions.

  6. Refrain completely from functioning as a school disciplinarian. The CSSO is not to be involved in the enforcement of disciplinary infractions.

  7. The CSSO should not be placed in a student supervisory role in lieu of building administration.

  8. Serve at all times as a role model to students by demonstrating appropriate attitudes, behavior, courtesy, and respect.

  9. Participate in the development of plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations on school property.

  10. Coordinate the delivery of various health, safety, emergency response, and preparedness training for staff. 

  11. Participate in professional organizations and community activities/committees related to occupational health, safety, and emergency preparedness.

  12. Knowledge of and ability to interpret local, state, and federal legislation, regulations, policies, and rules governing health and safety issues.

  13. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

  14. Exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions in a manner consistent with essential duties, responsibilities, laws and regulations. Maintain confidentiality in appropriate situations..

  15. Build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation within the District and develop and maintain constructive, cooperative, and positive working relationships with stakeholders.

  16. Works with local law enforcement agencies as needed regarding district safety and security.

  17. Oversees the compliance of required safety drills on assigned campus (i.e. fire drills, lockdown drills, tornado drills, earthquake drills, bus evacuation drills).  Submits all associated reports.

  18. Assists with training for staff, students, and public safety officials relating to school safety, security, and emergency preparedness. 

  19. Contributes team effort by integrating safety, security, and emergency preparedness measures into the organization’s daily practices in a manner supportive of other departments and functions.

  20. Works with campus surveillance systems to ensure the best possible video coverage of facilities. Work with the technology director as needed. 

  21. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Designee.

*Additional duties may be assigned to promote the efficient and effective daily operations of the District. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises, evaluates and directs the work of all transportation staff according to District policy. All school employees have the responsibility of supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and/or Experience: Commissioned School Security Officer training or willingness to complete training within the first year. Prior successful experience working as a police officer is  preferred.

Demonstrated ability to successfully work with and lead or motivate students, parents and staff.

  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small group situations to students, parents and other school staff. Ability to verbally respond to common inquiries from students, parents, coaches and staff. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions to practical situations such as budgets.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in varying forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to problem solve and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet software and word processing software. Ability to proficiently use the following program strongly preferred: Google Suites. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.

  • Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of adolescent students. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods. Ability to delegate responsibilities and meet timelines. This work requires working non-standard hours.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card..
