Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Bedside Nurse Practitioner provides both Nursing and Clinical Care to patients under his or her care (Average 4 to 6 patients) mostly in the progressive care unit and if required in other Medical units. Bedside Nurse Practitioner will provide high quality, efficient and cost-effective inpatient care following the facility's established standards and policies in accordance with the State of Indiana Rules and Regulations as defined in the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice Act. Care is performed through a collaborative practice agreement with the Marion Health Hospitalists. Functions as an extension of the physician in diagnosing and treating patient conditions by performing tasks or combination of tasks traditionally performed by the physician. Uses protocols and clinical judgment to carry out duties. The Nurse Practitioner - Specialist is expected to project a positive image and service excellence of the organization to the patient while using appropriate critical thinking skills to make independent decisions within the scope of the position. The Nurse Practitioner - Specialist will provide for the health care needs of those patients who are admitted to the various inpatient and outpatient departments of Marion Health providing specialized services. The Bedside Nurse Practitioner is committed to making an impact in the lives of their patients and their colleagues. The Bedside NP is professionally engaged, possesses clinical expertise, and has a high level of spirit, inquiry, embraces learning and fosters patient relationships. This position is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care, which includes assessment, diagnose outcomes, planning, implementation and evaluation. Participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to advance the patient's plan of care

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of accredited School of Nursing with a master's degree in nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse Indiana license or eligible.
  • Meet current qualifications to practice as an advance practical nurse in the State of Indiana.
  • Successful completion of certification.
  • Minimum of two years nursing experience in a hospital or practice setting.
  • CPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire.
  • Other advance life support may be required by unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE/ ABILITIES

  • Requires mathematical calculations and medication preparation and administration.
  • A professional level of knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and other managed care regulations.
  • Requires the ability to read, write, and follow directions.
  • Requires excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Requires interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Requires developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, echarting, email and other standards applications related to the department operations and job function.
  • Requires strong customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient centered care.
  • Requires ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
  • Requires ability to provide clinical reasoning; decision-making and critical thinking.
  • Requires the ability to use independent judgement and discretion.
  • Requires the ability to analytically evaluate problem situations in-depth and come to independent, appropriate conclusions. Requires the ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
  • Requires the ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on patient needs.
  • Requires basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.
  • Requires ability to react appropriately in any environment or situation.
  • Requires general awareness and understanding of legal implication of patient care activities and self-performance while performing job duties.
  • Requires the ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Risk for occupational exposure to blood, body fluid and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Works in close proximity to patients and visitors.
  • Requires ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACTIVITIES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT
  • Requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Use of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Requires lifting supplies and equipment typically found in clinical patient care areas.
  • Operates equipment typically found in patient rooms.
